Football Chocolate Covered Pretzels & Oreos

Next weekend, there’s a football game that’s kind of a big deal. Not necessarily to me, but I know a lot of other people are really into it. I mostly just watch because it means I get to eat some pretty great snacks. And I’m really into snacks. I made these chocolate covered pretzels and Oreos for one of the first games this season and they were not only delicious, but the football laces and team colors were festive and fun. To make these chocolate dipped treats, I melted milk chocolate and white chocolate almond bark (you can also use chocolate chips, but it think almond bark melts better) in 30 second increments in the microwave, stirring between each 30 seconds. Once the chocolate had smoothly melted, I used food dye to turn some of the white chocolate blue. You want to use only a small amount because white chocolate can easily seize up when you add a liquid of a different temperature and consistency to it. For the football laces, I dipped each pretzel and Oreo in milk chocolate and used a spoon to smooth out the chocolate on the bottom of each pretzel and cookie, so there wasn’t too much excess chocolate. Then before the chocolate hardens, I used white sprinkles and placed them on each pretzel/cookie to make the short laces. Once the chocolate dried, I put a small amount of white chocolate in a ziplock bag and snipped off a tiny bit of the corner. Then I squeezed white chocolate from the bag into thin lines on the pretzels/cookies to make the long lace. On the Oreos, I curved the long lace slightly, so it looked more like a rounded football.

For the red, white, and blue pretzels (or whatever team colors you like), I dipped the pretzels in white chocolate, sprinkled with red sprinkles, and let the chocolate set. Then I put the blue chocolate in a ziplock bag and squeezed it onto the pretzels in a zig zag pattern and let that dry. Placing your dipped pretzels and cookies onto wax paper while they dry is recommended because you can easily peel them up off the paper once the chocolate sets.

Of course if you don’t care much about the game and are just there for the snacks, you can also top these pretzels with crushed candy bars, mini chocolate chip, mini m&ms (in team colors or not), crushed candy canes, or crushed Oreos. Anything that goes with chocolate is fair game here!

Chocolate Covered Football Pretzels & Oreos

Servings: about 12 servings

Ingredients:

1 cup milk chocolate almond bark or chocolate chips

1/2 cup chocolate almond bark or white chocolate chips

Food dye in team colors

White sprinkles

Colored sprinkles in team colors

24 Pretzel rods

12 Oreos

Directions:

1. Melt chocolate in 30 second increments in a microwave, stirring between each 30 seconds. Once the chocolate is melted and smooth, it’s ready. If chocolate starts to harden during the dipping process, heat again for 10-15 seconds and stir.

2. Add a small amount (a couple tablespoons) of white chocolate to a separate bowl and dye with food coloring into your desired team colors. Allow chocolate to cool slightly before adding food dye and use only a small amount of food dye to prevent the white chocolate from seizing up.

3. Dip 12 pretzel rods and 12 Oreos in milk chocolate and use a spoon to smooth off excess chocolate from the bottom of each pretzel/cookie. Place dipped pretzels/cookies onto wax paper as the chocolate sets. Before the chocolate dries, place white sprinkles horizontally in a row to make the short football laces. Allow chocolate and sprinkles to set.

4. While chocolate sets, dip 12 pretzels in white chocolate, using a spoon to smooth off the excess chocolate from the bottom of each pretzel. Place dipped pretzels on wax paper and sprinkle with colored sprinkles. Allow chocolate and sprinkles to set.

5. Once milk chocolate had dried on pretzels/cookies, put a few tablespoons of melted white chocolate in a ziplock bag, seal the bag, and snip off a tiny bit of one corner of the bag. Squeeze chocolate into a thin line on each pretzel/cookie to create the long football lace. If desired, make the line on the Oreos slightly curved to make it appear like a rounded football. Allow to set before serving.

6. Once the white chocolate has dried on the pretzels, place a few tablespoons of colored white chocolate in a ziplock bag, seal the bag, and snip off a tiny bit of one corner of the bag. Squeeze chocolate into a zig zag pattern over the pretzels. Allow to set before serving.
